Challenge #74—The Best Year Ever

Have you ever tried explaining to someone how the world has changed since you were born?  Well, if you haven’t or even if you have, today’s challenge is a good way to document the big changes that have taken place in the world!

What was happening in the world when you were born?

You can do this about the day you were born, the month or the whole year.  There are many different things that you can record.  Here’s a list of some things you could include:

The weather on the day you were born
Famous people (don’t forget things they did)
Movies or TV shows that were popular
Songs, albums and musicians who were at the top of the charts
Companies that started and are now successful
News events that happened all around the world
What was going on in your home town or with your family

To find info on what was going on, try doing a search like “what was the number one song on (insert date)?” or “world events in (year)”.  I found quite a bit of information from 3 sites, and I was blown away by the things I learned!

Also, don’t forget to ask your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or anyone else close to you who may remember what was going on.  They may even have pictures to share with you!

This is also a good challenge to do with kids right now while it’s easy to find pictures and info.  Plus I know my kids would love to see what was going on when they were born even though it was only a few years ago.

Here are a couple of examples for you:

---------------
What Laura did:

Laura typed up some of the events that were going on the year she was born and put them on a Word document.

1973

---------------
What I did:

I made a digital scrapbook page with some of the information I found online and put them into categories.  I also copied a few pictures from a site and inserted some pictures that I got from my mom which showcase a little bit about the era (like my fancy stroller, he he).

Now I challenge you to record some things about what was going on when you were born!  Smile

Challenge #73—Fail On

No one in this world is perfect…in fact, if you’re like me, you’ve made PLENTY of mistakes.  The thing about making mistakes, is that if you don’t learn to laugh at them, it can make for an unhappy life.  So, today’s challenge is going to help us all learn to poke fun at ourselves and our mistakes.  (Plus, I think it helps those who come after us to realize that we were human too!)

What is a fail that you’ve had?

First of all, I just HAVE to post a few things to get your minds rolling…and get you to giggle a little bit too.

Source (plus a few more if you’re still craving some laughs!)

Here are a couple ways to do this challenge:
*Make a list of some different fails you’ve had—you can give a few details about each one.
*Go into detail on one fail.  Write a story, a blog post or make a scrapbook page about it.

----------------------
What I did:

I actually made a scrapbook page a few years ago about a fail I’d done.  I didn’t have time to do a different one right now, so I thought I’d share this one.  I made a scrapbook page poking fun at myself for my little fail about accidentally baking a batch of brownies where the spoon fell into the batter and I didn’t know it until I cut the brownies up!

And since I made this a few years ago, I really have no clue who made the supplies, otherwise I’d list them…

Now, I challenge you to record one of your fails! (Or more if you want! Smile)

Challenge #68—Yum, Yum

Food.  We all eat it!  We all enjoy some or a lot of it! So, this is what today’s challenge is:

What are some of your favorite foods?

You can go about this a few ways.

  • Focus on your very favorite food, whatever it may be, and go into the details of why you love that food.
  • Make a list of all your favorites.  You can even add things you don’t like if  you want.
  • Focus on your favorite meal for each time of day  (“My favorite breakfast is ________.  My favorite lunch is ________.  My favorite supper is ________.”).  Or you can focus on just one meal you would eat a lot if you could.
  • Don’t forget dessert and drinks!  If you have any favorite desserts or drinks, you can add those as well!

Here are a couple of examples for you.

What I did:

I made a list of my favorites in each type of category.  (Also some of my least favorites mixed in there as well.)  This would be easy to do by hand or type up quickly if you’re short on time.  Remember, just get it recorded somewhere, somehow!

Challenge #66—Wear it proudly

Yipee!  Our summer break is over and we have a brand new challenge for you today!  I’m a little giddy about this one.

What is a favorite article or type of clothing?

You can do this in a broad way—think types of clothing like jeans, shoes, jackets, t-shirts, etc. are you go-to faves.  Or you can do this in a more specific way, like recording about a very favorite hoodie, or some beloved yoga pants.  This is a time to show a little bit about why you wear what you wear, so don’t forget to record why you like that item/type of clothing!  You could also do a little spin on this and record about a favorite item of clothing that is no longer…and maybe even find a picture of it and tell why it was your favorite and what you would do if you could have it again.

This would also be a fun challenge to do with kids—especially if they have a favorite item of clothing they love to wear a lot! (I’m so doing this with my twins who constantly wear their Superman and Batman shirts!)

-------------
What April did:

April just had carpal tunnel surgery, so she went easy on this challenge instead of her normal digital scrapbook page…and that’s quite alright!  I hope no one ever feels that they always have to do the same thing every time—that’s what makes the challenges unique, just like you!

There was NO hesitation for me as to what my favorite piece of clothing is! I served a mission for my church for 18 months in Paraguay. I spent the first two months in Provo, Utah learning Spanish. It was September and October and cold in Utah. I hadn't prepared for colder weather since I was going to a tropical climate so I didn't have anything warm to wear while I was in Utah. I ended up buying a sweater there. I didn't know it would end up being my favorite piece of clothing!
Photo 1I'm glad I ended up having to buy that sweater because I used it a lot on my mission in the winter. Winter temperatures only got in the 60's in Paraguay, but with the humidity it seemed cooler than it was.
Photo 2It turned out to be a comfort item for me as well. It was a little piece of home. I wore it traveling from my mission in Paraguay back to my home in Utah!
Photo 3It kept me warm through many winters and I took it everywhere with me.Photo 4

(Me in my sweater my first winter back from Paraguay.)

Photo 5

(Carving my pumpkin for Halloween in my sweater.)

Photo 6
(It came with me to collage at Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho. I was REALLY glad I had it there. It is FREEZING in Rexburg during the winter!)

I finally had to retire my sweater. I wore it so much that the zipper pull fell off, the sleeves are shreds, there are holes in the pockets and the elbows are almost worn through. I can't bring myself to throw it away and still sometimes pull it out to snuggle in during the winter.

Photo 7(This is me in my sweater now.)

Photo 8
(It is nearly falling apart!)

Photo 9
This sweater has been with me for a very long time. I have many memories wearing it. It's a part of who I am. In a way, I consider it a dear friend who has gone through the good times and the hard times with me. I don't think I will ever part with it because we have gone through so much together!

How cute is that story?

--------------
What I did:

I have a serious love of shoes.  I know it’s totally cliché, but for some reason I’ve always loved shoes.  I remember as a little girl sneaking into my mom’s closet and wearing her high heels, dreaming of the day when I could own my own pair.  Now I have A LOT of them, so I decided to record a little bit about why I love a cute pair of pumps.  (And a little bit about my other shoes.)  shoe love

I have already recorded a little bit about my love for shoes before, but this one is a little different.  See the first time here. Smile

Now I challenge you to record a little something about a favorite clothing item!

Re-Challenge #20

I must admit, it’s been fun for me to go back and see these challenges again.  And though I’m taking the summer off from recording challenges, it’s made me really want to go back through and do some of them again, just because things have changed that much and I want to record the now as well!  How grateful I am that I recorded the things I did when I did.  And yes, when I have a spare minute, I will do some more recording!

Here is this weeks’ re-post of challenge #20:

Not one single person in the whole entire world is like another.  We all have different physical features, different likes/dislikes, different habits and talents.  Even identical twins are individual and unique!  So, here’s to uniqueness:

The Challenge:  What are some of your funny and unique habits and talents?

In this week’s challenge you can focus on just one funny or unique habit or talent.  You can make a list of every unique thing about you.  You can focus on some of your funny talents.  Complete it how you want to!

This week’s challenge would be a fun one to do with the whole family—get them all together and have everyone write what they think all the other’s funny and unique talents/habits are!  It would be a fun game!

----------
What Kim did on her private blog:

This one happens to connect with my soccer days as well:
In high school we had to jog in place while passing the ball back and forth to a partner for warm ups. It was part of our daily routine.
To this day when I play soccer (which is only once or twice a year now if I am lucky) I still find myself jogging in place when either passing the ball against a wall or to a partner. I've noticed that when I pass it to another person they will look at me like I am crazy because they are just standing there passing it back and forth, but my feet just won't stop jogging!

----------------------------

What I did:
I had a busy week, so I just made a quick list of one thing for each member of my family.  (For the kids, this is just a look at them now—phases if you will—because we don’t really know what cool talents they have yet.)  I am dreaming up a scrapbook layout with a picture graph of each person and one talent and one habit.  Someday…  Here’s a quick look at what I have finished, to give you some ideas of things!  (Or just laugh at...!) Winking smile

Quinn:  Can touch his tongue to his nose!
Emily: Can arch one eyebrow—on both sides!
C: Can make new friends anywhere he goes.  He pretty much tells them his life story in 5 minutes.
T:  Goes from the worst kid that makes us scream to the sweetest, world’s best kid in 2 minutes flat.
R: Has to take his “Dog Dog” stuffed animal EVERYWHERE!  (That thing is nasty.)
C: Can talk like Tarzan on his vowels!

------------------

Now, I challenge you to record your “you”niquenesses!

Re-Challenge #4

Today we have another re-challenge for you!  This is an oldie (challenge #4), but a goodie!  (Because honestly, who doesn’t like to play?)

When you have a few minutes or a few days, what do you like to do in your “play” time?

You can share what you do now, what you used to do as a child, or even what you’d like to do when you retire! Make a table showing the things you’ve liked to do to play in different periods of your life.  What has changed or stayed the same? Why do you like to do those things? You can expound on this, or keep it simple! This is a challenge that would be fun to do with kids too—have them record their favorite activities a few times in their lives or once every year.  Wouldn’t that be fun to see later?

--------------------------

What I did:

I explained a bit about what I like to do now: create things. I made a two page digital scrapbook layout about how I love to create things, and the individual things I take time to do to “play”. I added in some pictures that I already had on my computer of some of those things that I wrote about.

The challenge is now yours! Now…go PLAY! Smile (And record about it!)

Challenge # 63—So Much Alike

Today’s challenge is kind of a fun one that I’d never really given much thought about recording before.  One day I was thinking about how I’m more like my dad than my mom, and I wondered which of their parents that my parents were more like.  I of course thought, “That would be a fun thing to record…I will make it a challenge!”  So…

Who in your family are you most like?

It can be one of your parents, a grandparent, a sibling, a cousins, etc.  Just pick someone who has similar traits, mannerisms and/or looks as you.  Of course, you can choose more than one person.

This would be a fun challenge for kids to do, or do as a family activity.  I know two of my boys are similar in personalities—more so than my twins, and that would be fun to record.  You could also choose a person whom you want to record about and have him/her do the same for you, then put them together!

If you are adopted, you could do a fun twist on this by recording which traits, mannerisms or habits of your parents/family members you’ve picked up on, even though you don’t have the same genetics.  If you know your birth parents, you could tie back into the things that are similar, even though you weren’t raised by them.  Oh, the possibilities!

Here are some ideas to help get you started:  (I wish I would’ve come up with this list before I did mine, because there are a few things I didn’t think about recording!)

Physical features—hair color, skin tone, same eyes/nose/chin/etc., long or short legs or torso, small or big feet, etc.
Mannerisms—cocking your head, making a certain face, something you do while listening, etc.
Traits—being able to do things like rolling your tongue, flexibility, athleticism, skills, smart, etc.
Other—personality, kind hearted, shy/outgoing, a natural leader, good listener, organized, volunteer, hobbies, interests, etc.

-------------
What I did:

I decided to just make a quick digital scrapbook page of some of the things my dad and I have in common.  I wish I would’ve had a picture of the two of us together, but I can’t even remember the last time we had one taken.  It’s on my to-do list now!  I think I may do another version of this challenge too—my littlest sister and I look alike, but we are nothing alike in personalities.  I want to record about how she is my “twin” as far as looks go though.

Challenge #62—We Need a Hero

First off—I’m sorry that I totally spaced the Fast Fact Friday.  Again.  I’m trying to do better, but seem to only be getting worse at it.  I even have a reminder on my phone.  Life is just crazy and busy.

On to the new challenge:

Who is your hero?  Why?

You can focus on one person who has done something (or a lot of things) that you admire.  You can talk about a few different people who have inspired you to become better.  You can make a list of many people and the ways they inspire you.  It’s totally up to you.

Think of close friends, family, community or religious leaders, or even someone you don’t know personally, but admire because of their exemplary life.  Think of people who’ve been heroes in different ways—someone in the military, someone who speaks of peace and serenity, or someone who has beat all the odds.  Keep it simple or make it elaborate—however you want to record it, it’s your story!

--------------
What Laura did:

Laura made a simple layout showcasing four people she views as her heroes.

Supplies - cardstock - Club Scrap; patterned paper - unknown; letters - AC Thickers; journaling spot and embellishment – Jillibean

--------------------
What I did:

I really wanted to just make a list of all the people who are my heroes, and tell a little bit why…then I found this cute paper and happened to have a picture that I could use and ended up making a real scrapbook page.  I have gone mostly digital, but still really love “getting my hands dirty”, so it was fun to do something simple with my hands instead of my finger on the mouse. Winking smile

Challenge #60—Gifted and Talented

Wow—I can’t believe we are on challenge #60!  I do want to know, has anyone done all the challenges?  If you have, leave a comment and let me know—I would just love to know if anyone has taken the challenges and recorded them all in some way, shape or form!

We will now move on to this challenge…

What are some of your gifts and talents?

I know it’s hard to sometimes admit the things we’re good at, for fear that we’re bragging, but it’s also important to recognize all that we’ve been blessed with!

Here’s a quick list I thought of, that gives you some ideas of where your gifts and talents may lie.  This is just a starting point, to get you thinking.  I obviously couldn’t write down, or even think of every talent that is out there!

Academics: Math, science, writing, memorizing easily, reading quickly, strategy in life or games, etc.
Physical: Sports, running, flexibility, exercising, martial arts, dancing, etc.
Creative: Crafting, music, photography, drawing/painting, scrapbooking, designing, decorating, cooking/baking, etc.
Personality:  Loving, thoughtful, cheerful, kind, energetic, outgoing, shy, quiet, thinker, optimistic, etc.

You can simply make a list of the gifts and talents you’ve been given, write them in your journal, make them into a scrapbook or smash book page, or even use one of your talents to do something more (like write a poem or song about it if you’ve been gifted in that area!).  I know it’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these, but I’ve made a Fast Form freebie for any of you who’d like to use it!  Just click on the image to download!  (I do ask that you pretty please follow this blog via either Google Friend Connect, Google+,  Networked Blogs, FB or Twitter—or all if you wish!  Thanks!)

TIMC Fast Form--Gifted and Talented

Okay, now on to some examples for you!

--------------
What Laura did:

This month’s prompt was a hard one for me.  I don’t think of myself as having any “talents” or “gifts.”  Then I got to thinking that I have an incredible memory when it comes to remembering license plates (at least I used to have an incredible memory).  Here is a layout I created explaining this so called “gift” of memory.

IMG_3993

Supplies List:  Cardstock – Bazzill; Patterned Paper – Sn@p Simple Stories; Title – AC Thickers; Car Chipboard – Bella Blvd.; Arrows – Studio Calico

---------------
I love Laura’s spin on this!  What a fun little quirk about her that few probably know, and now she has it recorded!

What I did:

I actually decided to twist this one a little bit.  I’m going to print off and fill out the Fast Form, but I thought it’d be fun to do a scrapbook page based on something one of my Church leaders taught in a lesson a few years ago that has stuck with me.  I wish I would’ve written out the journaling before-hand, but I just wrote it as it came to me, so it’s not perfect and doesn’t really convey all that I had wanted to say—but it does get my point across!

TIMC 1iHere’s what the journaling says:

“Once upon a time…I thought I didn’t have many gifts or talents.  I wasn’t exceptionally good at anything…I didn’t have a “thing” in High School like others did.  I have always been just “alright” at a handful of things.  Musically, I do okay on the piano—not well enough to play for Church.  I also played the clarinet a bit and I can sing well enough for a choir but not any solos.  Artistically I can’t draw, but I am a pretty good photographer and good at scrapbooking.  Academically I was always a B+ or A- student—not good enough grades for scholarships.  I was (still am) a pretty good teacher, but not teacher of the year quality.  I was/am a pretty good dancer, though I never made any special teams.  I feel that I am just pretty average at all that I do.  One Sunday, our Bishop taught a lesson I’ll never forget.  he was using Elder Oaks’ “Good, Better, Best” talk and focused on how if we spend all our time on just 1 or 2 things we become like blocks, but if we are good at many things, we are well-rounded.  That put my life in perspective!  I may not be the best dancer, photographer, or even mom…but I am WELL-ROUNDED!”

timc 2i

----------------
What Kim did:

Again, I just take the question and write about it on a private blog that I created for the TIMC questions.  Then, if I can find a picture that applies to it I like to put it on my blog as well just to jazz it up a little.  It keeps it quick and easy, but I enjoy recording it.

I chose to focus on one gift/talent that I feel has shaped who I am:   HEART--the talent of putting everything into something.

I don't know if this really counts as a talent, but I know it is definitely a gift that has helped me through all my different talents in different stages of my life.

Growing up I was never the most skilled sports player, but I was always one of the toughest people to play against because I had heart.  I would give my all in everything I did.  In every practice I went to, in every game that I played; in every ball that I would slide for or dive for, I put my whole heart into it.  This didn't ever make me the best, but it made it look like I was talented in sports.

In school I was never the smartest person in my classes; but I would put my heart into my projects, assignments, and presentations and always succeeded because I gave it everything I had.

As a trainer, I feel that having the talent of heart helps me motivate my clients.  I put everything I have into helping my clients succeed and it shows by how well my clients do and how excited they are to come train with me each time.

As a mom, I KNOW I am not the best mom in the world; but I put my whole heart into it and I can only hope that by continuing to do that my children will know how much I love them and want the best for them.

So I don't know if heart counts as a talent or not, but I truly feel that if you don't use your talents you lose them, and I know that if I quite putting my heart into everything I do, I would lose it and it is a something I don't want to lose.

--------------------
Now I challenge you to record some of your gifts and talents!  Smile

Challenge #59--Personality

It's time for another new challenge!  First of all though, I'm sorry I was a couple days late getting this up.   I had two kid's with science fair projects due Thursday, and I was in charge of our Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet last night, so I've been super busy getting everything ready for those...plus teaching in the twin's co-op  preschool, babysitting the neighbor and just all the other things that are involved with being a mom of 4.  Whew.
Well, enough of me, this is about you getting your story written!

How would you describe your personality?  (How would others describe you?)

This one is a fun challenge--I think mostly because those who are not in our immediate circle may not really know our true personalities.  Also, it's fun because I know I think of my personality as being different than other people do.

Remember, you can do this anyway you choose!  Also, don't forget that your personality is as much the bad things and habits as it is the good.  I love it when people are humble enough to admit what they do wrong--it makes them seem more real and human.  :)   If you need some help thinking of what some of your personality traits are, find some good lists here, here and here.

Here are a couple of ideas to get your wheels turning.

---------------
What April did:

I have been feeling like I need to change who I am and what my priorities are in my life. I have been studying from an AMAZING man, Kirk Duncan. Kirk loves to help people find the obstacles that they face and show them how to get through them. One of his tools he teaches is a project called "Who I Want To Be". He says this tool is the first and most important step a person can take in their life. I am free to choose what I want to believe and what I want to experience. And my life isn't over; I still have time to adjust, improve, change and build my character and personality. I decide what it is that I am made up of. I choose the skills, the attitudes and the abilities that I have always wanted to have. So in this project, I had to draw an image that resembles me and then place words that I want to be a part of me or who I want to be. I then had to post my collage in a place where I can see it daily and be reminded of whom I want to be. I thought that this project went perfectly with this week's This Is Me Challenge. I choose what my personality is and how I see myself and how I portray myself to others. What an amazing experience this has been! I have learned a lot about who I want to become and saw the strengths that I already have that I want to continue to be a part of me.

Isn't April just amazingly talented?  I absolutely love what she did!  So unique, and true to her!

What I did:

Well, with my crazy busy week, I just had time to type up a quick answer.   I thought it would be fun to just write a few words that described me, and what better way than to do that, than with the letters of my name?  Quick and simple, plus this would be a fun way to have kids describe themselves too!

E--Energetic.  Though I'm shy around strangers and big crowds, I feel confident and energetic when I'm in familiar surroundings.  I love being happy and showing that energetic vibe!
M--Modest.  I am modest in my dress and manners.  Some would call it up-tight, but I like to think of it more along the lines of moral cleanliness.
I--Impatient.  Something I'm always working on doing better in, but I still have too many moments of impatience with slow lines, bad drivers, when something is too slow for me, or when my kids don't listen to me.
L--Loving.  I do feel that I'm a loving and thoughtful person.  I sometimes don't act on it, but I often think about things I can do for others to show them that I love them!
Y--Yearn to learn.  I love learning new things and am always trying something new whether it be a craft, a skill, or an educational aspect of something.
 --------------

Now I challenge you to record a little bit about your personality!  :)

Challenge #58--Important Experience

We all have them…those special times in our lives when something seems to just click in our brains or hearts, and our lives are forever changed!  Some of them are small, simple things that change our way of thought or an action, and others are huge, life-changing events.  Some were good, some were not so good...but we learned something, and came away smarter and better because of it.

What was an important experience you had in your life, and what did you learn from it?

This is kind of a hard one, so here is a list of ideas to help jump-start your mind:

*A college/school course you had
*A special meeting or conference you went to for work or pleasure
*Becoming a parent or grandparent for the first time
*Something that happened with friends
*Learning a new way of life or a change in religious beliefs
*Serving others (service to 3rd world country, religious mission, helping the needy, etc.)
*Being served by others when you needed it most
*A song, poem, story, etc. that have changed your life or outlook
*Being part of a disaster (natural or man-made), or helping those who were
*A conversation with a  friend, co-worker or relative that changed your life
*The death of a loved one or even a pet
*Going through a trial you never thought you’d have to face
*A movie or show that may have really gave you a new point of view
*A near-death experience of you or a loved-one
*A terminal illness or bad accident of you or a loved one
*Meeting someone famous or even well-known, and what they said or did
*A miracle that happened to you

I think that should give you an idea or two!  And remember, you don’t have to limit this to just one thing…you can always record about any number of experiences you had and what you learned from them!

-----------
What Kim did:

I created a personal/private blog for doing the This is Me Challenge.   I like to just write a little about what the challenge is and then find a picture that goes along with it.  On my personal blog I like to put personal pictures that correlate with each challenge.  If I don't have any pictures that go along with the challenge then I simply go online and find a picture that goes along with it, just to jazz my blog up a little.  But I love the challenges and love to keep these things recorded for my family.

If there is one experience that I would want my kids to learn from me it would be an experience from when I was in 6th grade.   In 6th grade there was a gal in the school that spread some mean rumors about me.  I went from being a "cool" kid, to being one of the "un-cool" kids that nobody wanted to play with.  I decided to make friends with the other "un-cool" kids and learned that they really weren't all that bad.  It taught me that it is important to be nice to everyone.  There really shouldn't be any "un-cool" kids--everyone just wants a friend.  I have to admit, that when I was one of the "cool" kids, I didn't really talk to the "un-cool" kids...because I thought it would make me look bad.  During this time that I was friends with all the "un-cool" kids I was still very forgiving and nice to all the "cool" kids.  My whole 6th grade year the "cool" kids still didn't dare talk to me since I had been put in the "un-cool" group, but I never said anything negative about and never did anything to try to bring down.  Instead I would try to serve them and help them when they needed it. Most the time they would either deny letting me help them, or let me help them but then continue to shun me.  I simply forgave them and kept saying nice things about all my old friends.  For about five months I was classified as "un-cool", I remember writing in my journal how sad I was that all my friends hated me for an untrue rumor.  As the year progressed all the students were soon learning that there were lots of rumors being spread by people and that none of them were true.  When all my old friends learned that the rumor about me wasn't true; they wanted to be my friend again.

The two most valuable things I learned during this challenging time in my life:
1. Be nice to everyone!  People that gossip about you, people that hate you, people that are "un-cool", the "bad kids", the "fat kids", the "kids that pick their noses".  Everyone wants a friend.  An when you befriend someone who needs a friend.
 2. Forgive others.  There is no need to hold a grudge against people.  When you learn to forgive and serve those that hurt/offend you, a greater friendship can develop.

From 7th-12th grade I got several letters from fellow classmates, teachers, and parents saying how people appreciated and looked up to me because I was friends with everyone.  I did not classify people as "the goths" or the "jocks".  I was friends to everyone.  Now, not everyone liked me, but I truly liked everyone in the school and tried my hardest to never say anything negative about someone.  I also got lots of letters from my friends thanking me for forgiving them back in 6th grade.  I am very grateful that I had that experience in my life and I'm glad that I learned a valuable lesson from it.

What Laura did:

Laura just wrote a quick summary of her challenge this month.  Moving can take up time, but I love that it's still possible to record something, even when time is short!

There are so many life changing experiences that I have already gone through in the first 40 years of my life.  For example, buying my first house, getting married, losing friends, having children, changing jobs multiple times, and even a BIG change that is soon approaching – the move of my family out of the state of NJ, the only state I have ever lived in.  I’m leaving behind my parents, my brother and my nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, but I’m looking at the move as a positive one.  I can always come back to visit and everyone can visit us too.

I do have to say that one of the biggest life changing experiences in my life, is the loss of my grandmother.  My grandmother passed away last March (can’t believe it’s been almost a year).  She was in and out of the hospital the last few months of her life, but she always bounced back and returned home.

I went to call her one evening at home to see how she was, and my aunt answered the phone to tell me Gram was going to the hospital yet again.  That was the last time I dialed her phone number.

She was admitted to the hospital, and I was able to visit her a few times, but she had tubes down her throat and wasn’t able to actually speak.  At first she would use hand gestures to talk and she was able to shake her head to answer questions.  But her responding to us ended soon, because she was then sedated and wasn’t responsive.

She ended up passing away, at the age of 90, a few days after my last visit with her.  I miss her terribly and think of her every day.

My life lesson from this experience is to spend more time with your loved ones.  Don’t put off visiting someone, if it is in your heart to go and see them.  I wish that I had seen my grandmother more over the past few years.  I would see her during the holidays and during the times she would come up to visit my parents, but that just wasn’t enough.

What I did:

I actually had a hard time choosing what I was going to record (at least for now, anyway, as I will be doing at least 2 more when I have some more time!).  But I narrowed it down to one of my favorite songs, and wrote a little background about what was going on in my life the first time I heard it, and why it meant (and still means) so much to me.  Oh, and I did this on a digi-scrap page.  This was actually really hard to put up on here, because it’s something I rarely talk about to others, and most people don’t know this about me…even writing it brought tears to my eyes.  Sigh.  So please, no hate comments that I will have to delete.

You can find the song here if you’d like to listen to or buy it!  It’s #9.

Now I challenge you to record a bit about something important that happened to you, and what you learned from it!

Challenge #56—Holiday Happenings

Happy New Year everyone!  It’s hard to believe that 2012 is over.  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and wish you the best year ever.

While talking with my dad a few weeks ago, I remembered a fun story about myself as a kid and told him about it.  He said, “You need to record that!” and I took that to mean, “you could make a fun challenge that goes along with that”, so I did!

What is one of your favorite holiday memories?

You can focus this challenge on something you just did this season, or a fun little memory from when you were a kid.  You can focus on just one, or list a few that you’ll never forget.  To give you some help, here are some ideas!

What Kim did:

Kim just wrote down one of her favorite childhood Christmas memories—when she got her very own dog!  Short, simple, easy.  And now, recorded!

One of my most memorable Holiday memories was when I got my very own dog for Christmas.  I was about 8 or 9 years old.  I remember my parents driving up in our big Dodge Ram Van on Christmas Eve.  I went out there to see what they had gotten and inside the van was the cutest black dog I had ever seen.  Everyone in my family said he was the ugliest dog they had ever seen, but I didn't care, to me he was the cutest dog ever because he was my very own dog. And he was my buddy!

What I did:

I made a digital scrap page of the story that inspired this challenge—my sister and I trying to sneak into the living room early on Christmas morning.  (I’m still not able to get to my old pictures, so yes, pictures will have to be put in later on this one too…if there even is one…sigh.)

Now I challenge you to go record one (or a few) of your favorite holiday moments before it becomes lost!  Winking smile

Challenge #52—Collections

Most of us have some kind of collection, whether it is an on-purpose collection, or something we unconsciously collect!

What do you collect?

Now, if you don’t purposefully collect anything, you can be creative on this one…for example my husband jokes that I collect plastic sacks, because I keep them in various places around the house so I don’t have to go get one from the collection bag in the kitchen every time I need one.

But, most of us probably have something we buy as souvenir’s each time we go somewhere, or that people always give us a gifts.  This is also a fun challenge for kids to do who collect something.  I plan on doing this one with my 7 year old who collects rocks from everywhere we go!

Here are a couple of ideas to get your mind going, but remember, you don’t have to scrapbook it.  Even just taking some pictures and writing a blog post about it is great!

What April did:

Explanation: I never intended to collect bells. It just sort of happened. One year for Christmas someone, I can't remember who, gave me a bell. And from that time on everyone thought I collected bells and continued to give me bells for birthdays, Christmas and just for fun. So I started getting bells in all the places that I traveled and all the places that mean something to me. Each bell has a story and has become a history of who I am and where I've been.

What I did:

From the time I was young, I have loved elephants, and started collecting them when I was a bit older.  Though, when we moved 6 years ago, I packed them all up and only took them out today to photograph—I have little kids now and I don’t want them to get ruined!  So it was fun to pull my little collection out and see them.  My 3 year old twins were in awe of all these cool elephants they’ve never seen before.  Sadly, I will have to pack them back up again until our basement is finished and I have more room to properly display them!  It was fun though, to remember all the places I got them!
